Hello Democrats. We need to have a little talk about immigration seeing as you don’t appear to understand what is going on. Since Knuckle Head and Chief took office a year and half ago immigration has been a constant issue. Starting with the Muslim ban, then the Dreamers showdown, and now we are discussing separating families and abolishing ICE. For the most part I’ve been on your side for all of this. Honestly, I’m happy to have you back on my side, seeing as many on the left put their heads in the sand during the Obama years. Yet here is the thing, if you keep this up you are going to lose elections.
Is it right? No. Is it Fair? Not at all. Do immigrants deserve our compassion and political attention? Absolutely. Has Trump insulted large swaths of immigrants? Several times. Does all of that justify the hysteria the left gets into every month or so over immigration? Sadly no. Here’s why. Immigrants aren’t citizens. Congress, the President, and all of the US government has a responsibility to manage immigration, but that can’t take primacy over the responsibility to the citizens they represent.

Okay I think we’re done with that. Let’s move on.
Its not pretty, and I wish it wasn’t this way, but anti immigration politics is often a winning strategy. US history is full of politicians promising to quell the flow of immigrants. Its not a good look, and many of our darkest hours were in relation to keeping immigrants out. Roosevelt told Hitler “no” when he wanted his Jewish population to immigrate to the United States. How many thousands died in gas chambers because of that policy. This wasn’t the president abusing his powers either, this was popular and a vast majority of Americans thought he did the right thing.
What leftist should realize is that no matter the policy, no matter how many politicians called immigrants names, no matter the general attitude of Americans towards immigrants, they always get in. People love to joke about the wall with witty lines like “You show me a 30 foot wall, I’ll show you a 35 foot latter.” If that’s the case then what difference does it make if we build a wall? Sure its a waste of money but 50% of what the Federal government does is a waste of money. Can’t we at least waste some money in an exchange to get some actual reform.
If immigration is what you actually care about (I’m not convinced, but let’s just assume its true) then we need to put on our big boy pants and deal with the world we live in, not the world we wish we lived in. Politics is about compromise and if you shove things down the other sides throat then as soon as one side is out of power all your projects will begin to be dismantled (Obamacare.) So what do you want? I swear to god if you say abolish ICE and push through the Dreamer act I’m going to kill a puppy. Think bigger.
Agree to build a wall, agree to start using the term “illegal” rather than the “undocumented,” and acknowledge that not all immigrants are minority single mothers and innocent children. In return you get to triple the number of legal immigrants. How great is that! All you give up is a dumb 30 billion dollar project, and two nothing burgers. This isn’t even a win win, you are flat out robbing the right. So lets stop all this constant virtue signaling nonsense and get something done.
